Rome's municipal rose garden, terraced into the Aventine Hill above the Circus Maximus, opens for a brief window each spring when over a thousand varieties of rose bloom simultaneously. Free, extraordinarily fragrant, and almost entirely unknown to tourists. Built on the site of Rome's ancient Jewish cemetery — it carries a quiet, layered history.

“Visit in the first two weeks of May when the blooms peak. Come early morning before the heat and while the light is still soft. The views over the Circus Maximus from the upper terraces are worth the climb.”
